Watching this in real time was amazing. What a scene:

Almost as amazing is the mental gymnastics involved in trying to spin it as anything but positive.

Trump could bridge peace with another Galaxy and they would say interstellar warfare is better for the planet.

Meeting N Korea doesn’t reduce their nuclear arsenal which is why this DMZ photo op is irrelevant. The N. Koreans have always been willing to meet U.S. Presidents as a way to boost their status at home butt they haven’t been willing to negotiate eliminating their nukes and they’re still threatening Japan and S. Korea

If it was irrelevant why was it such a big deal especially to the North Koreans?

It was a massive step and gesture.

Pandering to the dictator while simultaneously holding a gun to his head is an effective negotiating tactic. The Clippers (yes, the crappy JV Los Angeles team) landed Both Kawhi and Paul George so I learned this last week anything is possible!

As I stated initially. Itís good PR for the dictator. Heís not giving up his nukes though. And we arenít holding a gun to his head. Any attack on N Korea will end in all out war. N. Korea will Nuke S. Korea and Japan which is a global catastrophe. This is exactly why the foreign policy community is against our president meeting with Kim; it only gives the communist dictatorship legitimacy to be on the same stage as the president of the USA

Right because dictators are all about good PR and winning over domestic media and voters. lol

At the end of the day there are limited good options. The best one IMHO is to maintain a friendly dialogue while reinforcing our position that nukes need to be removed. They have enough traditional weapons to kill millions as is if they wanted. Economic isolation like we're pursing is an act of war and a gun to their head.

The N Koreans have been trying to improve their international image for decades and meeting with the US brings him legitimacy with other world leaders. Both Kim jong-un’s father and grandfather wanted Summits with our country. Now Jong-Un has no reason to negotiate anything else because they’ve gotten what they want without giving up anything. As far as our policy goes, we want them to eliminate nukes but the N. Koreans want US troops to leave the Korean Peninsula. In other words, they want complete capitulation of US interests in the Pacific. No way that should ever be on the table after we fought 3 wars there over the last 75 years to keep the peace. We sure as hell shouldn’t give that up.

So what is Trump negotiating? Like I said they aren’t giving up the nukes and we already have sanctioned their regime for the past 25 years. What’s the strategy? Another year of sanctions isn’t going to break them.

Giving up his nukes wasn't a part of this meeting. He is just supposed to give them up instantly? It's a peace process. It won't be accomplished overnight. This was a great step forward.

Whether you like it or not he is the leader of North Korea. What would you do? Ignore him until his nuclear arsenal is ready to go?

Last I checked I remember Churchill and Roosevelt meeting with Stalin. Did they give the USSR legitimacy? Why was that ok?

South Korea wants our troops to leave and they should take over their own security interests. It isn't in our interest to remain in Korea forever. Just like it isn't in our interest to police the Middle East.
